Responsorial Psalms are ancient songs of praise and prayer and are an important and often musical part of the Liturgy of the Word in the Catholic Mass. The root of the word 'psalm' is Greek for 'songs sung to a harp.' Many of the 150 psalms in the Old Testament Book of Psalms are attributed to David.
Typical implementations involve the accompanist playing an introduction (usually the refrain), the cantor sings the refrain, followed by the assembly singing the refrain a third time. Then the verse, refrain, verse, refrain cycle is repeated until there are no more verses.
