Responsorial Psalms are ancient songs of praise and prayer and are an important and often musical part of the Liturgy of the Word in Christian and Jewish worship. The root of the word 'psalm' is Greek for 'songs sung to a harp.' Many of the 150 psalms in the Old Testament Book of Psalms are attributed to David.
Typical implementations involve the accompanist playing an introduction (usually the refrain), the cantor sings the refrain, followed by the assembly singing the refrain a third time. Then the verse, refrain, verse, refrain cycle is repeated until there are no more verses.

| Psalm 72 Refrain:
Justice shall flourish in his time,
with fullness of peace for ever.
Verses:
O God, give your judgement to the king,
To a king's son, your justice,
That he may judge your people
In justice and right judgement.
In his day, justice flourishes,
Peace 'till the moon fails.
He shall rule from sea to sea,
From the Great River to earth's bounds.
For he shall save the poor when they cry,
And the needy who are helpless.
He will have pity on the weak,
And save the lives of the poor.
