Responsorial Psalms are ancient songs of praise and prayer and are an important and often musical part of the Liturgy of the Word in the Catholic Mass. The root of the word 'psalm' is Greek for 'songs sung to a harp.' Many of the 150 psalms in the Old Testament Book of Psalms are attributed to David.
Typical implementations involve the accompanist playing an introduction (usually the refrain), the cantor sings the refrain, followed by the assembly singing the refrain a third time. Then the verse, refrain, verse, refrain cycle is repeated until there are no more verses.

| Psalm 78 Refrain: Do not forget the works of the Lord.
Verses:
Give heed, my people to me;
turn your ears to the words of my mouth.
And I will open my mouth in a parable revealing hidden truth.
But their words were mere flattery
they lied to him with their lips.
For their hearts were not truly with him;
they were not faithful to his covenant.
Yet he who is full of compassion
forgave their sin and spared them.
So often he held back his anger,
when he might have stirred up his rage!
