Advent Psalms and Songs
The Advent season is a season of anticipation and preparation. Major figures in the Advent season is John the Baptist who began his ministry before Jesus did. John encouraged the people to repent their sins and prepare the way of the Lord, which are two of the big themes in the season. Mary, the Mother of God also figures prominently since without her participation in God's plan there would be no Christ in Christmas.
Important songs used throughout the season include the 9th century chant, O Come, O Come Emmanuel. Peter Brockmann's contemporary arrangement updates the rhythm for our modern ears, but remains true to the English translation of the traditional lyrics and the familiar melody and structure.
In the church year A (readings are selected on a 3-year cycle where cycle A begins in November 2010), the four Advent psalms are:
- Psalm 122 - Let us go rejoicing. This setting for piano, guitar and vocals, written especially for this collection offers an upbeat and simple melody and rhythm.
- Psalm 72 - Justice shall flourish. With a solemn musical arrangement, this psalm sings of God's promise for justice and right judgement, two attributes that the prophets promised for the Messiah.
- Psalm 146 - Lord, Come and Save Us colorful melodies and vibrant harmonies characterize this ancient prayer-psalm.
- Psalm 24 - coming soon.
